9610 Food Festivals & Events

04 Aug

You’ve been asking me questions about food festivals and as I’ve not known the answers, because wag food haven’t told me, I’ve had to send another FOI through to get this information. Follows is wag’s answer in full:

1. I require a full list of all festivals that applied for Welsh Government funding for 2015 in the first and second tranches.
2. How much funding did each festival apply for?
3. A full list of festivals that applied for funding and were not successful. Also the amount they requested.
4. The reason why each festival either wasn’t funded or had their original funding request reduced.
5. For second tranche of funding I require answers to questions 1, 2, and 3 above.
1. Details of all Food Festivals supported within the first and second tranche of support have been published on the following page:

2&4 The following have been offered support below that requested including reason for variance, all the others have been offered support at the level requested:
Grant Request         Grant Approved       Reason for variance

Hay Summer Festival –        £2,492                           £1,701                  50% of Eligible costs
Menai Seafood Festival –    £5,000                           £4,634                         “ “
Brecon Food Festival  –       £4,850                           £4,000                        “ “
Hay Winter Festival –          £2,292                           £1,701                          “ “
Abergavenny Food Fest –  £21,850                         £14,350                       “ “
Conwy Feast  –                    £25,000                        £15,255                        “ “

3&4 The following festivals were rejected, including reason for rejection:
Broneirion Festival – £4,919 – did not meet the basic criteria
Greenman Courtyard Event, London – £10,000 – event outside of Wales.
5. Included above.

I’m at a loss with wag food as I simply do not understand why this year they’ve put festivals into two tranches. Last year the maximum grant was £10k, this year the maximum grant is £25k, but why the increase when wag food have been telling me for the last ten years festivals must aim to be self-funding. Guess why I’m puzzled is what wag food mean by ‘aim’! No doubt this all makes civil service sense to wag, but it certainly doesn’t to me. I’m also puzzled as to why festivals think that getting a grant of £1,700 is worth the hassle with the red-tape and paper-work, plus the criteria that wag create.

Wag and wag food say Welsh food and drink is important to Wales but do let me know your views if you have time………

    Cheers for this update.
It makes interesting reading, but like you I cannot fathom wag foods’ reasoning.
Seems like double the workload to me, but civil servants are happy with that
AIM to be self-funding – really? When?
This explains why we’ve no confidence in wag food.

Thanks for struggling to get this detail from that shower.
I do want to know who is getting what.
Wag food seem to think we shouldn’t have this info.
They are so out of touch with us.

This is so patheic you couldn’t make it up. Thanks for trying, I’d give you a medal.
Why have you had to waste so much time trying to get the basics from wag food about festivals they’re are funding?
You always sent one list around to us bow people and that had all the info. we wanted. It always came late, but wag food struggled to get this info out any earlier. Anyone with sense would have this funding wrapped up in November and it would give us time to plan. Guess that’s impossible for wag food to do, now more so as it looks like they don’t know many of us are trading in Wales.

Just trying to do a good job for our BOW and for Welsh food and drink, so no medal required.
Please stop aslking me questions about the workings, or not of wag food.
Ask wag food yourself, who knows you might get helped better than I do, let’s face it, it could hardly be worse could it?
Wag hold the purse strings and they have no need to communicate with the food and drink producers they have on their data base. It’s down to you to search for any info. you want.
Sorry but do talk to wag food, you can save me a job and they might help……

Wag food must be the only people who know why this year’s funding is even worse than ever.
It takes civil servants to make a job even more difficult than needs be.
so they are good at something

Why do wag food surround food festival cash in a veil of secrecy?
Why do you have to do so much work to get these details from them?
It’s our cash. We’ve paid zillions into Europe and get a sprinkling of it back, so we should have easy access to know where it’s being spent.
We’ve never had an open and honest government and that certainly is true about the food dept.
Shame you’ve not had any more brown envelopes through with wag’s secrets shown. Shucks that your other mole, unlike Ian, has gone quiet.
Come on Mole No. 2 spill the wag food beans, or have you lost your bottle?
Do hope that’s not the case because we need more people besides these guys backing us.
I’m pleased I’ve got somewhere to vent my frustrations with wag food, knowing I can also remain secret.

All this work you’ve had to do because wag food can’t do their job and help you, help us.
You’re doing part of their jjob for them but you get no respect from them. Typical of civil servants.

    Come on Kath.
Please listen to those of us that want you to print the problems we’re having with wag food. You owe them nothing and certainly not loyalty.
I’m convinced that if your readers, who are real Welsh foodies, will give us more support if they know the truth about wag food.
Their attitude to you is appalling and no-one these days should be bullied and never by civil servants.
Who does these people think they are. We pay for them. There’s a code of conduct for civil servants but guess it’s no point asking civil servants to investigate each other. That would be more than a waste of time.

Kath, wish you’d take a vote from all your bow people and see how many want you to print the truth as we see it about wag food, and those that don’t.

Gee whizz. Not getting why wag can’t understand producers. Or wont do so.
Many of us rely a lot on festivals and markets. Also not understanding why we don’t deserve any explanation as to why festival funding has altered this year with two lists.
When budgets are constantly cut, why aren’t producers asked their views? This is our money and we should get input on how wag spend it or usually waste it.
Grateful for you doing the graft on this K. but clueless why you have had to go to these lengths to help us get basic info.

I think what comes through from this site is the frustration of producers and their reluctance to tackle wag food directly, because they are too scared. Their fear of blackballing is evident and what they’ve done to Kath is proof, if more prooof were needed.
Many prodcuers label wag food’s arrogance and that in my opinion is correct.
They think they’re superior to us, that they are more important, but totally forget that without us paying them, they’d be unemployed.
I’ve just checked and this site has been running for five years and wag food despite reading it they remain so arrogant that they see fit to brush off what Kath says, it touches too many nerves. They top that with even more rudeness, to ignore our comments. That’s ARROGANCE.
