Davies: “Plaid’s Welsh Independence Plot Another Broken Promise”
Conservative Senedd member for the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend Andrew RT Davies has said Rhun ap Iorwerth’s meeting with other separatist leaders to plot Welsh independence amounts to “another broken election promise”.
During the Senedd election campaign, the Plaid Cymru leader assured voters it was “not an election about independence”.
Mr Davies said Ap Iorwerth’s decision to welcome Sinn Fein and the SNP to Wales to work more closely together on issues, including breaking up Britain, showed Plaid’s pre-election pledge was “a lie”.
Mr Davies said:
“Plaid Cymru separatists assured us the Senedd election was not about Welsh independence, yet Rhun ap Iorwerth is welcoming the SNP and Sinn Fein to Wales as they plot to break up Britain. This is yet another broken promise, following on from Plaid Cymru separatists’ failure to deliver their free childcare pledge. I stood for election on a clear and unequivocal commitment not to prop up a Plaid Cymru separatist administration – we must not do deals with parties whose aim is to break our nation apart.”
The first ministers of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have begun meeting in Cardiff today to discuss “working more closely” including on constitutional issues. It’s the first face-to-face meeting among the nationalist leaders since Plaid Cymru’s Rhun ap Iorwerth was elected in May, with all three wanting their countries to leave the United Kingdom.
However there are differences in what the three leaders want in the immediate term; with Scotland’s John Swinney and Northern Ireland’s Michelle O’Neill openly talking about wanting referendums, while in Wales ap Iorwerth has ruled out pushing for one now.
Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald is also attending.
For the first time since devolution began, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland all have first ministers who want to leave the United Kingdom.
Well in my view, thanks to Welsh Labour, propped up mainly by Plaid we have broken Wales and now it appears that the leaders of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are on a mission to break up the United Kingdom. So much for Plaid Cymru separatists assuring us at the Senedd election their manifesto was not about Welsh independence……………………really?
